Visit York's City Walls walkway, an elevated circular route around the city centre, which can be accessed on foot, for free, throughout the year. York's historic city walls are a major feature of our historic environment and civic identity.
If the idea of bringing your dog to York is giving you paws for thought, don't worry, as man's best friend will always get a warm woof of welcome, with many dog friendly businesses located in the city.
More than 65% of businesses in the city are independent – and many welcome dogs with open arms – so whether you're visiting York to shop, eat or explore, you're in for a unique experience.
Service Animals. Registered service animals are very welcome at all our sites. We have a water bowl at the admissions desk for them to use. Service animals may toilet outside in a small grassy area between the JORVIK Viking Centre and the nearby St Mary's Church.
There are a few bits of dry moat left around the banks. The slopes are well known for their daffodils in March and April. At other times they are grassy or covered with wild flowers. A walk all round the walls [going up on the wall-walk, or just using the pavement outside them] takes about 2 hours.
York's medieval City Walls (or “Bar Walls”), a scheduled ancient monument encircling the historic City of York, comprise 3.4km (2 miles) of surviving masonry. They are the longest town walls in England.
Start your York walls walk at Bootham Bar, which is next to the De Grey Rooms. If you were hoping a bar was secret code for “pub”, more of those later!
Animals. We welcome all assistance dogs to our sites. We ask that they are appropriately trained, supervised, and kept with you at all times as we do have many objects on open display.
York (Short Sands, Long Sands, Cape Neddick, York Harbor Beaches): Dogs are prohibited on York beaches between the hours of 8am and 6pm on all public York Beaches between May 20th and September 20th. Ogunquit Beach: Dogs are banned from April 1 – October 1, however, there is an in town dog park!
Only guide dogs and assistance dogs are allowed in the Centre. We have over 50 acres of outside space which our four-legged friends are welcome to enjoy provided they are kept on a lead. We have doggy water fountains and bins near our North and South entrances.
Dogs must be on leash. No advertising (flyers, pamphlets, or handouts) No remote controlled soaring and/or gliding crafts. No water or electrical hookup.
There are multiple dog-friendly areas scattered around the park. Some of these areas include Harlem Meer, East Meadow, Cedar Hill and Mineral Springs. In addition, there are 29 dog fountains throughout the park. It's important to keep your dog well-hydrated when you visit the part to prevent dehydration.
Dogs are welcome on all our trains except Dining trains and some Special Events (see individual event pages for restrictions) provided they are kept off the seats and tables. A dog ticket is £3.00 per dog per day (Free if you are a Member).
Whitby is one of the most dog-friendly towns in the UK. You won't have a problem finding suitable accommodation, a restaurant or pub to welcome you and your dog here. Except for raw fish, the four-legged friends will devour meats that span from drumsticks to prime cuts. Additionally, they will gladly accept fruits such as apples, tomatoes, and bananas. Drop the selected treat nearby and give the animal time.
