It is currently owned by Randal McDonnell, 10th Earl of Antrim. The McDonnells have been in Glenarm for nearly 600 years and the estate has been in the family for 400 years.
There is a small carpark at the end of a track just before the gates into the wood, entry and parking is free. There is a circular walk which takes you on a two mile walk through the forest and passes above the river with great views over the countryside.

Castlegarde Castle. Castlegarde is the oldest continually inhabited castle in Ireland. It was built as a safe family home in circa A.D. 1190 by Donal Mor O'Brien, the King of Thomond.
The present castle was built by the first Earl of Antrim in 1636 only to be burnt down 6 years later by a Scots Covenanter army during the Civil War. It remained a roofless ruin for 100 years before being re-built and remodelled by the 5th Earl of Antrim in the mid-18th Century.
