Ashbourne has a very bustling market in its marketplace every Thursday and Saturday. A traditional affair featuring lots of local produce, it takes place among the mediaeval street patterns and historic buildings and the cobbled marketplace complements the hidden alleys and yards which are a delight to explore.
Shopping in the market town of Ashbourne is pure pleasure thanks to its plethora of small, family-run businesses, antique shops, quality food and drink outlets and a weekly open-air market.
Thinly disguised as 'Lambton' in Jane Austen's literary classic Pride and Prejudice, Bakewell is the ideal place for an interesting town walk. Take a stroll through the town and discover scenic buildings, charming courtyards and pretty streets, or feed the ducks during a riverside stroll.
Back on solid ground, Chesterfield is a paradise for shoppers, with its handsome Market Hall and cobbled Market Place, home to one of the largest open-air markets in England, with a host of regular markets including farmers' and artisan markets.
Markets are held in the High Street every Wednesday and Saturday. There is a good mix of stalls: fruit & veg, artisan breads, cheeses, olives, flowers, clothing, tools, household goods, garden furniture and lots more.
Of the two towns, Buxton has more facilities and more to interest the visitor (Matlock itself has little to interest the Tourist although Matlock Bath is worth a day visit).
I think that Bakewell has more charm. You will know that Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are both close to Bakewell and well worth a visit. And do try a Bakewell Pudding. Or indeed Bakewell tart!
Once famed for its hydro and spa treatments, Matlock's central location, scenic surroundings and public transport links make it a popular base for exploring the Peak District and Derbyshire.
The Matlock Christmas Market is a two-day event held at Hall Leys Park on Saturday, December 16, and Sunday, December 17. A collection of old favourites and new surprises are expected for 2023.
Chesterfield Artisan Market is held on the last Sunday of every month. Find a high-quality range of authentic goods with an emphasis on all that is local, ethical and original.
Chesterfield is a market town in the Borough of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. It is 24 miles (39 km) north of Derby and 11 miles (18 km) south of Sheffield at the confluence of the River Rother and River Hipper.
Access to the area was improved in the 18th Century, and by the 19th Century Matlock Bath was a place for society's finest to visit. The town is still a wonderful place to visit, with a long street of shops, cafes, amusement arcades and places of interest, including an aquarium and photographic museum.
What Does Matlock Offer Visitors? Matlock is the county town of Derbyshire. It is small enough to be welcoming but large enough to offer a variety of shops, restaurants and bars. It also has a wonderful park, Hall Leys, which is in the centre of the town and gives a sense of space, openness and nature.
We love it here, open spaces for the dog to walk off lead, great local cycling and walking, 30 mins from bouldering and climbing, great local high street and shops means we very rarely need to go into Derby.
Both have some nice accommodation but maybe Matlock Town is more convenient for the bus connections to the some of the places we want to visit. On the other hand there are many other attractions in Matlock Bath including the illuminations on that weekend, and more convenient for evening entertaining.
