In the 2024 CBS series Matlock, Madeline "Matty" Kingston (played by Kathy Bates) lost her daughter, Ellie, to an opioid overdose. The relapse and subsequent fatal overdose were triggered by the intense distress of her parents, Matty and Edwin, taking legal action to gain custody of her only child, Alfie.
The final scene changes everything as the viewers learn that Matty is Madeline Kingston, a rich woman living with her very much alive husband Edwin and raising grandson Alfie. Matty had been telling the truth about how her daughter, Ellie, died of an opioid overdose.
Though Charlene was a regular character, she admitted that her character wasn't given any meaningful plots or development throughout her time on the series. “The writers were just not able to write the character very fully,” said Purl. “Any show begins to take on its own format, and Matlock took on its own.”
Madeline Matlock is a fake name as she takes on a secret mission. She wants to find out who was responsible for her daughter's death. Should You Leave Assets to Your Children in a Trust or as a Gift? It turns out that her daughter died from a drug overdose.

Is Madeline Matlock the original Matlock's daughter?
That's Madeline Matlock (Kathy Bates) in the first episode of CBS's rebooted “Matlock,” inspired, of course, by the iconic lawyer TV show. But this is a fresh take on the character — Bates' Matlock isn't a long-lost daughter of the fictional icon.
Family. Ben Matlock is a widower who had two daughters, Charlene and Leanne, who both became lawyers in their own right and who both worked alongside their father at one point or another. His father, Charlie Matlock, was an auto repairman in Ben's hometown.
Months later, still trapped in the form of Dodge, Ellie returns when the Omega Door is briefly opened by Eden Hawkins and Josh Bennett. Although shocked by the events, Ellie shuts the Omega Door as the cave collapses and makes her way home, only to find no sign of Rufus before making her way to the Keyhouse.
She starred in two short-lived dramas for CBS: TV 101 from 1988 to 1989, and Island Son (1989–1990). In 1992, she joined the cast of the ABC legal series Matlock portraying Matlock's daughter, Leanne MacIntyre, and was a regular cast member; she was previously a guest star in the 1991 episode "The Suspect".
Nancy Stafford chose to leave the series after season six. She had just gotten married, filming was moving to North Carolina, and she did not wish to relocate. In 1997, two years after the end of the series, Andy Griffith reprised the role of Matlock on a two-part episode of Diagnosis Murder (1993).
First appearance of Brynn Thayer as Leanne McIntyre, Matlock's daughter. Fans of the show debate whether this is supposed to be a second daughter or his only daughter. In season one, Linda Purl played Charlene Matlock, who left to go to work in Philadelphia, PA.
While fans might've originally expected Matty to be a relative of the original Matlock, Andy Griffith's character remains fictional within the show, and her grandson chose the alias for her as Matlock was her late daughter's favorite series—plus, the lawyer connection makes it even more appropriate.
It's too late. There's nothing Ellie can do to save the baby. Overcome with grief for what she's done, Ellie has a full panic attack. She only regains her senses and can stand when Tommy and Jesse arrive.
Even without the Riffel Rule, Duncan is unable to remember the existence of magic given his memories were removed by the Head Key due to witnessing a traumatizing event.
By the end of the Matlock pilot, however, audiences were clued into her real goal, which was to infiltrate Jacobson Moore to find the hidden document that could have taken opioids from a Big Pharma client off the market and possibly saved her only child daughter Ellie from her life-ending opioid overdose.
After a walk to think it through, she had an epiphany. The character of Matlock would be a woman — a female lawyer, using the name Matlock as a form of comfort, much like the title itself. “We were kind of using the title Matlock the same way I was,” Jennie explains.
Does Ben Matlock win every case? No, he does not. While normally his client is innocent and the episode is about proving them innocent by finding who really committed the crime, that it not always the case. Normally, only once a season Matlock is shown to lose a case whether his client is really guilty or not.
Unbeknownst to everyone, Matty is really Madeline Kingston, a wealthy retiree living with her husband and grandson and determined to avenge her daughter's death, which was the result of someone at Jacobson Moore concealing documents that could have helped take opioids off the market.
In the new Matlock series, several cast members wear wigs to achieve their on-screen looks. Kathy Bates, for example, is known for her ever-changing hairstyles, and her character Matty Matlock sports a signature silver bob that is actually a custom wig designed for the show.
