TikTok, known in mainland China and Hong Kong as Douyin (Chinese: 抖音; pinyin: Dǒuyīn; lit.'Shaking Sound'), is a social media and short-form online video platform owned by Chinese Internet company ByteDance. It hosts user-submitted videos, which may range in duration from three seconds to 60 minutes.
The name "Douyin," meaning "shaking sound" in Chinese, emphasises its focus on music and sound-centric short form videos. Although Douyin is the Chinese version of TikTok, marketers looking to engage audiences in China need to understand that TikTok and Douyin function differently and require distinct strategies.
The transliteration of Douyin is ``Shaking Music'' btw and named after Beijing Shaking Youth Technology the guys that made it. Its now owned by ByteDance. Douyin is the Chinese version of this app. Tik Tok is the non-chinese asian version of the same app with less features than the Chinese version.

Douyin is focused mainly on video content, whereas XiaoHongShu (XHS) stands out by offering a variety of content types, including images and text-based posts, on top of just short-form videos. This variety allows brands to engage with users through different formats.
Unfortunately, the app is only available on the App Store for mainland China users. As a result, the Douyin app is unlikely to appear in your usual app store. To find and install the app, you will need to adjust the App Store region to China mainland in the App Store settings.
