The hike to the summit of the mountain and back takes about 2-3 hours, however, visitors are free to walk just as far as they wish before turning back. Along the way, there are multiple smaller shrines with stacks of miniature torii gates that were donated by visitors with smaller budgets.
Fushimi Inari is not a single landmark; it is a mountainous area housing more than 30 shrines spread over a 4-km long hiking path. Most people do not go to the top and return after visiting the Sen Bon no Torii spot. If you chose to hike to the summit then you would spend roughly 3 hours.
The hike involves a bit of stair climbing, but if you take it slow, it's not too strenuous. For much of the hike, you'll be passing through hypnotic arcades of vermillion torii (Shinto shrine gates). And you'll pass various shrines and subshrines along the route.
The hike has 12,000 steps to the top. The incline is relatively low, with a total height of 233 meters (764 feet). The entire loop hike up Fushimi Inari-Taisha takes about 90 minutes and covers roughly 4 kilometers.
Is it better to go to Fushimi Inari in the morning or at night?
As most shrines in Japan don't have closing hours and are free to enter, you can go to Fushimi Inari at any point in the day or night! We recommend going in the early morning, between 6 or 7 am, for the best experience. You will dodge the crowds and spend a quiet morning amongst the beautiful nature atop Mount Inari.

What is the 80% rule in Japan?
Hara hachi bun me (腹八分目) (also spelled hara hachi bu, and sometimes misspelled hari hachi bu) is a Confucian teaching that instructs people to eat until they are 80 percent full. The Japanese phrase translates to "Eat until you are eight parts (out of ten) full", or "belly 80 percent full".
Unless you plan on visiting Fushimi Inari purely to take pictures at the first torii gates, we would recommend wearing comfortable shoes and clothing. Even if you don't plan on walking the whole length of the shrine, you will still want to explore the temple complex and cover a fair distance of the torii gates.
One of the reasons for the higher survival chances is the rising awareness around the topic, which leads Japanese people to use prevention measures such as cancer screening.
Under Japanese law, persons suspected of a crime can be detained for 23 days without charge. The length of detention, up to the maximum period, is at the discretion of the public prosecutor and subject to the approval of local courts.

Although Mt. Fuji boasts Japan's highest elevation at 3776m, it is possible to climb it with children. When I climbed, I encountered a family with a 5-year-old child. That family was on their descent, and I remember that child energetically making their way down.

Mount Fuji, at 12,389 feet (3,776 meters), can be climbed in one day. The climb, while still challenging due to the rapid altitude gain and potential for altitude sickness, requires far less time and endurance compared to Kilimanjaro. This makes scaling Mount Fuji much easier.
