Butlin's was founded by Billy Butlin to provide affordable holidays for ordinary British families. Between 1936 and 1966, ten camps were built, including one in Ireland and one in the Bahamas.
Skegness is where the Butlin's story began. Founded in 1936 by Billy Butlin, it was the UK's first-ever holiday camp and is just as popular now as it's always been.
The holiday business, Butlin's, has been bought back by its original owners more than 18 months after it was sold. Current owners Blackstone and Bourne Leisure have agreed to sell the firm back to the Harris family for £300m. Butlin's, which has a head office in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, was sold in January 2021.

The Minehead monorail closed following an accident during the summer of 1996. One train ran into the back of another and 7 people received minor treatment. Butlins were fined a total of £22,500. The cost to upgrade the system was thought too high, so the monorail was closed for good.
This diversified offering sees us welcome around 1.5 million guests per year across our three resorts, which are located in Bognor Regis (West Sussex), Minehead (Somerset) and Skegness (Lincolnshire). As of September 2022, Butlin's is owned by a company backed by the Harris family.
As of April 2024, two of the remaining Pontins resorts (Brean Sands and Pakefield) were closed to the public for a temporary but extended period due to serving as accommmodation for construction workers on nearby projects.
We are pleased to welcome caravan owner's dogs - just contact us in advance of arrival - but not those of holiday guests. We don't accept dogs listed under the Dangerous Dogs Act, and pets are not permitted on the main Butlin's resorts, with the exception of accredited assistance dogs.

Which Butlin's is the cheapest? All three Butlin's resorts have similar prices, however, Bognor Regis typically comes out the most expensive overall. Occasionally you can find incredibly cheap deals for Butlin's Minehead if you go during Tots weeks during term time. Skegness is somewhere between the two.
Butlin's has shown fundamental resilience over many years. Between 2005 and 2019, a period which included the Global Financial Crisis and a huge growth in budget flights into Europe, the resorts maintained guest numbers of c. 1.2 million per year.
The company has posted a pre-tax loss of £24.4m for 2023, according to newly-filed accounts with Companies House. The loss comes after the business, which runs sites in Bognor Regis, Minehead and Skegness, achieved a pre-tax profit of £61.2m in 2022. Its operating loss narrowed from £22.9m to £10.9m in the year.
