After visiting Ghent a couple of times, I would recommend at least 24 hours to really soak in all the history, culture, and relaxed vibes of this gothic city.
Overall, Bruges is more memorable, the tourist zone is bigger with more to do, and the food is better. Ghent has one small area that is breathtaking...but it's small and can be seen in about two to three hours. Beyond that, it's not nearly as picturesque as Bruges. Save Ghent for your second trip to Belgium.

Is it better to visit Antwerp or Ghent?
Combining modern and Middle Ages, Antwerp has a lot to offer all types of travellers. In terms of population, Antwerp is twice the size of Ghent so if you are looking for a city with an intimate feel, Ghent might suit you better.
Of course it is possible, however, you will only get a taste of what Bruges and Ghent have to offer. Both places are easily accessible by train from Bruxelles. I would personally prefer Bruges over Ghent. In this case really consider a private ride.
While most people only visit Ghent for a day or even a half day, there's much more to explore and you could easily spend three days and not get bored. However, for today, I'll show you a complete itinerary for two days in Ghent.
Ghent's main rail station, Gent Sint-Pieters (tel. 09/222-44-44), is on Koningin Maria-Hendrikaplein, about 1.6km (1 mile) south of town. Unless you need to count every euro, don't walk to the center; it's a dull route, even though it might take you only around 20 minutes.
