Mumbai is not a single, purely man-made island, but it is a city formed by extensively connecting seven separate, natural islands through massive land reclamation projects. The Seven Islands of Bombay (Portuguese: Ilhas de Bom Baim) were 16th-century Portuguese colonial possessions lying off the Konkan region by the mid-west coast of India. Following extensive land reclamation, the islands were merged with the Indian mainland and currently form the city of Mumbai.

The Maharashtra government officially changed the name from “Bombay” to “Mumbai” on 4 March 1995. The name Mumbai was chosen to honor Mumbadevi, the patron goddess of the Koli community, the city's original inhabitants.
