Peaky Blinders, now a hit television programme, may be a fictional story of the Birmingham underworld but it is based on the very real existence of a gang by the same name based in the Midlands in the late nineteenth century.
Although many characters in the series are based on real-life historical figures, most of the Peaky Blinders are entirely fictional and were created by Knight. Tommy Shelby is from a Romani family based in Birmingham. Murphy spent time with Romani people to prepare himself for the role.
Other elements such as education, discipline, and harsher policing and sentencing contributed to the decrease of the Blinders' influence and, by the 1920s, they had disappeared. As the specific gang known as the Peaky Blinders diminished, their name came to be used as generic term to describe violent street youth.

Thomas Michael 'Tommy' Shelby OBE DCM MM MP is the main protagonist of the Peaky Blinders. He is the son of Arthur and Mrs. Shelby, brother of Arthur, John, Ada and Finn Shelby, father of Duke, Charles and Ruby Shelby, as well as being the husband of Grace and Lizzie Shelby.
The Shelbys are specifically of Irish-Romani descent and refer to themselves as Gypsies, but their lifestyle differs from other Gypsy characters in the show. The use of the term "Gypsies" in Peaky Blinders is historically accurate, though many Romani people now prefer terms like "Rom" or "Roma."
Billy Boys originated in the 1920s as the signature tune of the Billy Boys, who were a Protestant Glasgow razor gang in Bridgeton (an area of Glasgow historically associated with the city's Protestant population, and with Scottish unionism – Brigton is the Scots form of Bridgeton) led by Billy Fullerton.
The decision to kill off John Shelby was necessary to legitimize the threat posed by the Changretta family and allowed for exploration of the show's true story influences and character emotions.
