Having used the exotic door style for several of its cars, the Italian manufacturer has become synonymous with the implementation of scissor doors, which are sometimes colloquially referred to as "Lambo doors".
These doors, first used by Bugatti in 1939 and recently used by Tesla in the Model X, are named for their similarity to seagull's wings, but might also be called up-doors or falcon-wing doors.
Most associated with the DeLorean sports car of Back to the Future fame, gullwing doors open on hinges placed at the top of the door. This means they open upward, resembling a large bird unfolding its wings. Hence the name gullwing doors, also sometimes called falcon doors.
A number of cars from other manufacturers have also used the design, such as the Hennessey Venom GT and Vencer Sarthe. Some concept cars have used swan doors as well, including the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 and EXP 12 Speed 6e, Nissan URGE, Bertone Nuccio, and Lamborghini Asterion.
Butterfly doors have been an adopted design of modern prototypes and supercars such as the McLaren F1, Toyota GT-One, Saleen S7, Enzo Ferrari (and its track day version, the FXX), Bentley Speed 8, Peugeot 908 HDi FAP, McLaren Senna, and Maserati MC20.
Of course, the manufacturers never used this term officially; Rolls-Royce called them “Coach doors,” Mazda called them “freestyle doors,” Opel had “flex doors,” and Saturn had “rear access doors.” But the term “suicide doors” was engrained into everyone's mind.
Scissor doors (also called flap doors, wing doors, beetle-wing doors, turtle doors, switchblade doors, swing-up doors, upswing doors, Lamborghini doors, and Lambo doors) are automobile doors that rotate vertically at a fixed hinge at the front of the door, rather than outward as with a conventional door.
Model X doors are electrically powered. When you approach Model X carrying a key, the doors automatically unlock. The front doors open when you press the door handle. You can also set the driver's door to open automatically upon your approach.
6) Butterfly doors -These are sometimes referred to as "butterfly wing" or "vertical" doors. They are usually found on high-performance, exotic cars. They move up and out via hinges that are located along the A-pillar. Butterfly doors have extreme wow factor when they are opened and closed.
Can I install Lambo doors on any car? Yes, but it might need modifications on the car that are irreversible. Be careful, some kits are unsafe and very hard to install.
