The brand used the iconic Viking longship as its logo. The rights to the brand are currently part of Jaguar Land Rover, which continues to produce Land Rovers, but no Rover automobiles are currently in production and the brand is considered dormant.
The earliest Rover cars were built in 1904; but it wasn't until 1922 that Rover's Viking theme began. As the word Rover means wanderer or seafarer, a Viking was considered a fitting mascot for the company.
Longships were naval vessels made and used by the Vikings from Scandinavia and Iceland for trade, commerce, exploration, and warfare during the Viking Age. The longship's design evolved over many years, as seen in the Nydam and Kvalsund ships.

Ownership of the original Rover Group marques is currently split between BMW (Germany), SAIC (China), and Tata Motors (India), the latter owning the Rover marque itself with its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover owning much of the assets of the historic Rover company.

For BMW, the merger was great news – it wanted to expand in order to prosper in the after-effects of the 1990s recession and growth by engulfing Rover seemed to make sense at the time. For British Aerospace, the deal was manna from heaven.
The Rover marque then became the flagship brand of the newly and eponymously renamed Rover Group in 1988, which included the actually stronger and more valuable brand names Land Rover and Mini as it passed first through the hands of British Aerospace and then into the ownership of BMW Group.

The Rover 75 was one of the last mass-produced cars from a British-owned manufacturer. This particular car was completed on 23rd March 2005, just two weeks before MG-Rover went into administration. It was bought six months later when liquidated stock was sold off and immediately put into storage by its new owner.
1978: Land Rover Limited becomes its own company under British Leyland Motors, 30 years after the creation of the first Land Rover model. 1994: The Rover Group is acquired by BMW. 2000: The Rover Group is broken up by BMW and Land Rover is sold to Ford.

In 2000, BMW sold off most of the Rover brands, retaining only the Mini brand. In 1998, BMW also acquired the rights to the Rolls-Royce brand from Vickers Plc. The 1995 BMW Z3 expanded the line-up to include a mass-production two-seat roadster and the 1999 BMW X5 was the company's entry into the SUV market.
In 1904, Henry Royce and William Rolls founded Rolls-Royce Limited, and it was then sold to Volkswagen where it was renamed Rolls-Royce Motors. Ultimately they sold it to BMW in 1998, establishing Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited. It has remained a BMW subsidiary ever since.
