A sprint is a short race and tests speed. These two races each require different running methods to win. During a sprint, a runner does not center on time or distance. Speedy is commonly used to mean prompt or with minimal delay. It's often used in the phrase speedy recovery, meaning a prompt recovery from an illness or injury. Speedy also means very fast. In this sense, it's often applied as a nickname for athletes who are very fast and quick.
Most sprinters (100m-400m) typically have an ectomorph body build. I fit squarely into this category. Ectomorphs tend to be naturally leaner with narrow shoulders and hips. It would take a considerable effort for us to get fat.
The skill of running includes jogging, sprinting, chasing, dodging and evading. All of these are important to many games (e.g. tag), sports (e.g. athletics) and everyday activities (e.g. running to get to school on time).
I call these two types of runners “soothers” and “seers.” Soothers seek to be as comfortable as possible in the present. They have music or other entertainment cued for the first minute of their treadmill time, as they do on long drives or flights.
Long Run: Long run distances vary based on the race you're training for. You increase your long runs during training. For instance, a marathon runner would build to a marathon length of 26.2 miles. Some training plans build to runs that are longer than the race distance. Every week, you should do a long run.
A marathon became 26.2 miles (42.195 km) because of a last-minute change at the 1908 London Olympics, when Queen Alexandra requested the race start at Windsor Castle so the royal children could watch from their nursery window and finish in front of the Royal Box in the stadium, adding the final distance to the original 25-mile route, a length that was later standardized.
The name Marathon comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek messenger. The legend states that he was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon (in which he had just fought), which took place in August or September, 490 BC.
According to legend, after the battle, a Greek soldier named Pheidippides was chosen to deliver the news of victory to Athens. He reportedly ran nearly 26 miles (about 42 kilometers) without stopping, reached the city, and exclaimed “Nike!” (“Victory!”) before collapsing and dying from exhaustion.
