A Printer's Proof (PP) is similar to an artist's proof. They were originally designed to monitor the progress of printing. They are a print or object that the manufacturer or printer receives as proof of their work.
Even though they look completely the same as any other print form the same edition, since artist's proofs only make around 10% of the edition, they are considered to be more exclusive (and more valuable) than regular prints.
When we refer to page numbers (printed pages – usually when printing and designing brochures, but also on folded leaflets and other booklets), this is the number of printed sides. We may also use the abbreviation 'pp', eg 4pp, which stands for printed pages, but is in effect the number of 'printed sides'.
Artist's Proofs are often marked 'A. P' or the French version 'E. A' (or E. d'A meaning 'épreuve d'artiste'). Approximately ten percent of a print run are assigned as Artist Proofs.
SP. Special proof. A proof specifically created for presentation purposes by the artist or publisher that equals the right to print impression or standard used for the edition. In some cases this is called a dedication proof (DP).

Another full form of PP is part participle. Past participle is a verb form that typically appears with have, had, or have. It is used to describe actions that happened in the past and is now complete. For example, the verb “read” becomes “has read” in the past participle form.

H.C. stands for hors commerce, or “not to sell.” Similar to an artist's proof, this proof was set aside from the editioned prints. Often the H.C. impressions were used as exhibition copies, so that the works being sold were not over-handled or damaged.
