A Zaibatsu (財閥) was a large, family-controlled Japanese industrial and financial conglomerate, like a massive trust or cartel, that dominated Japan's economy from the Meiji Restoration (late 1800s) until its dissolution by Allied forces after World War II. These powerful groups, such as Mitsui, Mitsubishi, and Sumitomo, controlled diverse businesses (banking, mining, trade, manufacturing) through a holding company structure, driving Japan's rapid industrialization.
However, the companies were not fully dismantled, and many zaibatsu companies, subsidiaries, and affiliates exist today. The legacy of the zaibatsu also exists in the "keiretsu," which are large vertically structured groups of companies with common interests.
