What happened to Singapore after the British left?
Singapore became an independent republic on 9 August 1965. By the 1990s, the country had become one of the world's most prosperous nations, with a highly developed free market economy and strong international trading links.
The last of the British troops left in 1976. In Britain, following the Labour Party's election into power in 1964, the new Labour government was forced to reduce the country's defence spending which was burdening its already weakened economy. Maintaining military bases in Singapore alone cost £70 million a year.
Surviving Our Independence. In 1959, Singapore achieved self-governance after years of struggle. The People's Action Party (PAP) was voted into power in the Legislative Assembly general election, becoming the first full elected government of the self-governing state of Singapore on 5 June 1959.

Declassified on the 1st January 1993, after a 50 year suppression under the UK Secrets Act, the Wavell Report made scathing allegations against Australian soldiers on Singapore Island leading up to the Fall of Singapore. Allegations that included desertion, indiscipline and failure to send out required patrols.

Japan was not formally colonized by Western powers, but was a colonizer itself. It has, however, experienced formal semicolonial situations, and modern Japan was profoundly influenced by Western colonialism in wide-ranging ways.
What was the largest surrender in British history?
During the fighting and immediately afterward, civilians were murdered, enemy soldiers decapitated, prisoners burnt alive, hospital patients slaughtered where they lay. Winston Churchill described the fall of Singapore as “the worst disaster and largest capitulation in British history.”
The first Japanese troops landed in Singapore via the northwestern coastline on 8 February 1942. After a week of intense fighting, the British Lieutenant General Arthur E. Percival surrendered Singapore to the Japanese forces under the command of Lieutenant General Tomoyuki Yamashita.
