What happens when you dip your hair in the Blue Lagoon?
Depending on your hair type and how sensitive you are, you might want to use a shower cap or keep your head and hair out of the water. The Blue Lagoon began as a pool of wastewater from the Svartsengi geothermal plant in 1976. Few Icelanders, if any, had any desire to bathe in it, as the idea of bathing in wastewater from any kind of power plant was considered crazy.
Is Blue Lagoon better in the morning or afternoon?
Midday is popular, but visiting early or late is good if you want to avoid crowded conditions. While hours at the Blue Lagoon vary throughout the year, the spa is generally open from early in the morning until late at night. The most popular time to visit is during the day, from 9am–1pm.
While guests are welcome to bring their own flip-flops or sandals, it's not essential due to the minimal amount of outdoor walking required. These provisions ensure flexibility and convenience, guaranteeing a seamless experience for all visitors.
Even though the last slot of the day is not as popular, the lagoon will likely remain full as there's no time limit. Most people spend at least two hours. Even when the lagoon is full, you'll still have plenty of room as there's a limit on how many guests can enter.
Why can't you get your hair wet in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland?
The Blue Lagoon water has high levels of silica. Silica is not harmful to hair. However, if you get your hair wet from the water, it can become stiff and difficult to manage. We highly recommend you apply conditioner to your hair and leave it in while you bathe.
Summer (June to August) is the best time to visit Iceland, thanks to the midnight sun and warmer temperatures. Hikers should consider July and August, when all the trails are open. Don't discount winter, though – February, March, September and October are the best time to travel to Iceland for the Northern Lights.
A minimum of 1 week in Iceland is ideal, but visiting for up to 2 or even 3 weeks will allow you to see more of this beautiful country in the same trip.

♨ The Blue Lagoon is made of geothermal seawater, and its high concentration of silica is part of what makes it magical for your skin. BUT it makes your hair feel like absolute straw if you dunk your head in the water. 🧴 To prevent this, the Blue Lagoon provides tons of conditioner in the locker room.
The water's temperature is 37-39°C / 98-102°F. The lagoon holds six million liters of geothermal seawater, which is renewed every 40 hours. Regular sampling shows that “common” bacteria do not thrive in this ecosystem, thus additional cleansers such as chlorine are not needed.
You are welcome to bring your own towel, robe or slippers. However, towels are included in all packages, so there is no need to bring it with you. Bathrobes are included with Premium and Signature admissions.
