A therian shift is a temporary experience where a therianthrope feels more connected to their non-human animal identity (theriotype) through changes in mindset, senses, or perceived physical sensations, like feeling a tail or hearing better, even though their human body remains physically the same. These shifts can range from mild to intense and include mental shifts (instinctive thinking), phantom shifts (feeling phantom limbs/body parts like tails or ears), and sensory shifts (heightened animal senses).

Why are kids becoming therians?

As long as you identify as a non-human animal in any way other than physical, and have involuntary animalistic experiences (doesn't always include shifts, it could be something as simple as urges or instincts, being drawn to certain environments, etc), you are a therian.
Some therians are able to learn to somewhat control their involuntary shifts, which can be helpful to prevent them from occurring at inconvenient times or places. Fully preventing involuntary shifts 100% of the time is almost impossible, however.
Gear is not what makes someone a therian, and it isn't a requirement to be a therian. Some non-therians wear gear without personally identifying as a therian or some other kind of non-human.

Furries and therians are two very different things and therians get upset when they're called furries. you're right when you say therians get offended when they're called furries. But furry is not considered a slur.
