The Chao Garden is a recurring, optional virtual pet simulator mini-game within the Sonic the Hedgehog series, most notably in Sonic Adventure (1998) and Sonic Adventure 2 (2001). Players hatch, raise, breed, and train small creatures called Chao—improving their stats (swimming, flying, running, power, stamina) to compete in races and karate matches.
Chao live in the “Chao Garden.” The Chao Garden is where you can breed and raise Chao.” Regardless of which Sonic Adventure game you are playing, in order to find Chao to raise, you will need to make your way to a Chao Garden! There are three Chao Gardens in each Sonic Adventure game.
The first garden you can access, the Chao Garden has two Chao eggs available for you to hatch. There is a waterfall which flows down into a small pool which the Chao can swim in. There are trees that bear fruit that the Chao can eat to raise their Stamina and lower their hunger.
The Chao Doctor will examine your Chao. The Chao Doctor will tell you some strengths/weaknesses of your Chao and will explain how it is feeling. In the modern games, there are two options available when you visit the Chao Doctor: “See the doctor”, and “Medical chart”.
If your Chao had a high enough happiness stat (this is a hidden stat– greater than 30 for SADX and greater than 50 for SA2), it will reincarnate and leave an egg. If it didn't, then sadly your Chao will not reincarnate and will be gone forever.
Unlike its game counterpart, the Chao Garden is a themed restaurant on Earth rather than an actual garden habitat. As of now, there is no answer given whether or not there are real Chaos while only being portrayed as mascots.
The animals will stay in the garden even when you leave, except for on the Dreamcast where all items left in the garden disappear for good! The four common animal colours — yellow, purple, green, and red — all raise the primary stats: Swim, Fly, Run, and Power, respectively.
Each lesson will be available for 60 minutes. Once you place a Chao in the classroom, it will take 30 minutes to complete the lesson. Unlike the Chao Garden, the classroom time will only pass while you are playing the game outside of Chao World - and not the time spent in the Chao Gardens!
