Gaza is a, frequently mentioned in the Bible as a major Philistine city-state on the southwestern border of Canaan. Meaning "strong" or "fortress," it served as a key trade hub, a barrier to Israel, and a site of intense conflict, most notably in the story of Samson. It was prophesied against for its hostility towards Israel.
Israel "gave up" Gaza through a unilateral 2005 disengagement, removing settlers and troops due to the heavy costs, security burdens, and demographic pressures, with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon seeing it as a strategic move to redefine borders and improve long-term security by avoiding prolonged occupation and shifting resources to more defensible areas, despite internal divisions and the eventual rise of Hamas in Gaza after the withdrawal.
We can first establish that Gaza was indeed part of the Land promised by God to Abraham. “On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: 'To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates…'” (Genesis 15:18).

What is the problem between Gaza and Israel?
Israel sealed its border with the Gaza Strip, largely preventing the free flow of people and many imports and exports. Palestinians shot Qassam rockets at Israeli settlements located near the Gaza borders, and staged cross-border raids aimed at killing or capturing Israeli soldiers.
Why do Israel and Palestine fight over the Gaza Strip?
Key aspects of the conflict include the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the status of Jerusalem, Israeli settlements, borders, security, water rights, the permit regime in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian freedom of movement, and the Palestinian right of return.
Originally an independent Canaanite cultural hub already renown in the 15th century BCE, Gaza first came under the control of the ancient Egyptians before re-emerging as an independent city kingdom, one of the pentapolis of Philistia.
Today, many Jews believe that the modern State of Israel is the beginning of the fulfilment of God's promise to Abraham. However, views vary. For some, the land holds deep spiritual and cultural significance. Others believe that a true return to the Promised Land should only happen with the coming of the Messiah.

God made numerous promises to Jewish people, including the promise to send the Messiah, which He fulfilled in Jesus. He also pledged to give a specific land to Abraham's descendants through Jacob forever (Gen 15:18, 26:3). After bringing His people out of slavery in Egypt, He led the Israelites to this land of promise.
Under the terms of the Gaza war peace plan that went into effect on 10 October 2025, Israeli forces withdrew from Gaza City, and the 20 living Israeli hostages, all Jewish, were released by Hamas on October 13. Thus, there are no known Jews present in Gaza City as of this date.
The arrival of Zionist settlers to Palestine during this period is widely seen as the start of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The Zionist claim to Palestine was based on the notion that the Jews' historical right to the land outweighed that of the Arabs.

From the timeline above, it is clear that Jews preceded both Arabs and Muslims in Palestine by 2600 years if measured from the time of Abraham or by at least 1600 years if measured from the establishment of Kingdom of Israel.
In 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew its troops and settlers from Gaza, though it retained control of its shared border, airspace and shoreline, giving it effective control of the movement of people and goods. The UN still regards Gaza as Israeli-occupied territory because of the level of control Israel has.
Palestinians primarily want an end to the Israeli occupation and the establishment of their own independent state in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem, with East Jerusalem as its capital, but views vary, with some favoring a one-state solution for equal rights or the return of all historic Palestine, all while seeking self-determination, justice, and an end to the blockade and settlements. The two-state solution (an independent Palestine alongside Israel) is a common goal, though support fluctuates, with many desiring full liberation and an end to the occupation as the core objective.
The UK supports a two-state solution, aiming for a secure Israel alongside an independent Palestinian state, and formally recognized Palestine as a state in September 2025 to advance this goal, while also backing Israel's security and right to self-defense. This stance involves diplomatic support for Israel, humanitarian aid to Palestinians, calls for ceasefires, and condemnation of actions violating international law, reflecting a complex position balancing support for both peoples' security and self-determination.

The Gaza Strip is crucial to Palestine as a densely populated territory that became a focal point for Palestinian identity and displacement after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, hosting many refugees and serving as a symbol of resistance, a potential future state in two-state solutions, and a site of historical significance as an ancient trade crossroads, linking Palestine's past to its aspirations for statehood.
