One of the world's most impressive angling achievements occurred on August 10, 1995, when Leo Cloostermans set the men's 4-pound-test line-class world record for Atlantic blue marlin with this 573-pound fish.
What is the 420 million year old fish found alive?
It wasn't until 1938 when a live coelacanth was caught in a fishing trawl that we realized they were still alive. Today, there are two known living species. The earliest coelacanth fossils date back as far as the Devonian period, approximately 420 mya.
The largest verified specimen belongs to the southern sunfish discovered dead near the Azores in the Atlantic has set the record for being the largest extant bony fish with the weight of 2,744 kg (6,049 lb).
According to the Press Democrat and SFGate, the hoodwinker sunfish is so rare that it was only officially recognized by the scientific community in 2017. These sunfish can weigh as much as 4,400 pounds and can grow up to nine feet long.
Even fishermen don't bother catching them either. As the only thing that likes eating them is parasites. Sunfish typically have over 40 different species of parasites living on their bodies at once.
We'll never truly know, but the largest whale shark, could be bigger than the Megalodon could have been. Meeting the giants of Darwin Island in the Galápagos was really special for me, after seeing hundreds of 'little whale sharks' on the Ningaloo, finally seeing a full grown adult was mind blowing.
While Megalodon was a colossal shark, the Blue Whale is the largest animal ever, dwarfing Megalodon in both size and weight, and prehistoric filter-feeding whales like the Balaenoptera genus also rivaled or surpassed it in length, though Megalodon was the apex predator of its time.
Dunkleosteus went extinct during the Late Devonian Mass Extinction (around 359 million years ago) due to severe environmental changes, primarily widespread ocean anoxia (lack of oxygen) caused by nutrient runoff from newly evolved land plants, leading to algal blooms that depleted oxygen, alongside potential global cooling and sea-level drops, making survival difficult for large apex predators like placoderms. While it was an apex predator, it couldn't adapt to these catastrophic ecosystem shifts that wiped out 70-80% of marine species, including its entire group.
From late May to early June 2025, the ocean revealed a series of rare and unsettling events — four unusual appearances of the oarfish, a mysterious deep-sea creature often called the “doomsday fish.” These sightings captured attention worldwide, blending science with myth and sparking curiosity about what drives such ...
Many more fossil coelacanths have been found since, ranging in age from 409-66 million years old. The living West Indian Ocean coelacanth reaches up to two metres long and 100 kilograms. It's typically found 90-300 metres below the surface, in waters 18°C and below.
Orcas are much larger than great white sharks, not much a contest. Megalodon on other hand, they're much bigger than even largest male orcas. Colton Smith oh yes orcas will absolutely kill a megalodon….
Bobi (Portuguese pronunciation: [bɔˈβi], 11 May 1992 – 21 October 2023) was a male purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo dog cared for by Leonel Costa of Conqueiros, Leiria, Portugal. Bobi was claimed by his caretaker to be the oldest dog to ever live and the first dog on record to reach 30 years.
The Turritopsis dohrnii, a species of jellyfish discovered in the Mediterranean Sea, is truly one of a kind. Unlike most animals that age and eventually die, this jellyfish has a unique ability: it can revert to its earlier polyp stage when faced with stress, injury, or old age.
𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘴 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴 (Southern Sleeper Shark) - 490 meters deep. Another unexpected encounter on our recent expedition to Antarctica! Despite the name, this species is not usually found this far south in Antarctic waters, in fact, sharks in general are not associated with Antarctica.
Now, a groundbreaking study has revealed shocking new details about orcas hunting one of the ocean's most massive creatures—the whale shark. These apex predators have developed a specialized technique to target and kill the world's largest fish, and the findings might change what we know about orca behavior.
Some fish fight hard because they are strong, and some fish fight hard because they are big, but there's only one fish that's the biggest and the strongest, and that's the white sturgeon. The Ivan Drago of the freshwater world, white sturgeon can grow to more than 10 feet long and weigh over 400 pounds.
