What is the difference between C rations and MREs?
C-rations (used WWII–1980) are heavy, canned, wet-food meals requiring manual opening and often heating, whereas MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat, 1981–present) are lighter, vacuum-sealed pouch meals that are, as the name implies, ready to eat without preparation. MREs offer superior nutritional balance, a 5–10 year shelf life, and come with flameless heaters, while C-rations offered fewer, monotonous options.
MREs are modern, self-contained individual field rations that require no preparation, while traditional combat rations like C-rations and K-rations were often canned foods or dehydrated components requiring cooking, heating, or water addition.
Starting in 1958, C-rations were slowly replaced by the nearly identical canned Meal, Combat, Individual ration. These rations were issued for most of the next two plus decades, until they were replaced by Meal Ready to Eat or MREs in the Mid 1980s.
MREs are high in sodium and low in fiber and fatty-acids. It is not recommended to eat nothing but MREs for more than 21 days.
