What is the difference between the Amish and the Mennonites in Canada?
Mennonites typically hold worship in traditional church buildings. In contrast, the Amish practice their religious gatherings in a more decentralized manner, rotating religious gatherings among different households within their settlements.
Unlike the Amish, Mennonites are not prohibited from using motorized vehicles. In addition, Mennonites are also allowed to use electricity and telephones in their homes.
Hutterites. The Hutterites are an Anabaptist religious sect, often placed in the same category as the Amish and the Mennonites. About 50,000 Hutterites live in Canada and the western portion of the United States. The religious sect exists in groups or colonies of eighty to 150 people.
Birth control varies among Mennonite groups. It is not so much a matter of belief but more a matter of what size family one needs. The more modern Mennonites frequently live in urban settings so large families are not needed and birth control is used.
While the exact time may vary depending on individual preferences and the specific demands of their work or community, it is common for the Amish to go to bed between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
For the most part, there are no problems with Mennonites dating non-Mennonites, particularly if the other person is a Christian. The more conservative groups would be more restrained as far as dating outside the denomination goes, but in the more modern Mennonite church, it's generally considered a non-issue.
Today these groups are among the most conservative of all Swiss Mennonites outside the Amish. They stress strict separation from "the world", adhere to "strict withdrawal from and shunning of apostate and separated members", forbid and limit cars and technology and wear plain clothing.
The Amish believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and would be a part of the protestant stream of theology. They emerged from the Anabaptists who began in the early 1500's. The Anabaptists, meaning re-baptizers, broke from the Catholic Church over infant baptism among other things.
Prince Edward Isl. The majority of Old Order settlements are located in the province of Ontario, namely Oxford (Norwich Township) and Norfolk Counties.
Black Mennonites live in Africa, the United States, Canada, and elsewhere. Black Mennonite communities have existed in the United States and Canada since the late 1800s. Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are home to the second and fourth largest populations of Mennonites in the world.
These basic beliefs include strict pacifism, shunning oaths, adult baptisms, foot washing, church discipline (excommunication), and separation from world, among others. The practice of these and other beliefs may vary from church to church.
But before getting started, let us begin by stating that the Amish speak a language called Pennsylvania Dutch. It is considered to be their first and native language. The Amish learn to read, write and speak in English, allowing them to communicate with the 'outside world'.
The Amish wedding night will usually be spent in the bride's parent's home, as the couple will need to assist in clean up the following day. They will then spend their first months of marriage – their honeymoon – visiting relatives. (This is when most gifts they receive will be given.)
Innerspring mattresses are also commonly used among Amish families. These provide firmer support than traditional handmade ones and are often preferred for durability. While still straightforward in design, they balance traditional mattress-making and modern sleeping comfort.
In Amish communities, divorce is not acceptable or authorized by the Amish church. When an Amish man seeks divorce, he must leave the Amish faith, resulting in him being excommunicated. On the other hand, the remaining spouse will not be allowed to remarry until the other one passes.
Their life expectancy is right at the US average even though they avoid modern medicine whenever they can...but the life expectancy of the Amish has been 72 or greater for almost 300 years, even when ours was 40 and they still eat like our ancestors did too, which is pretty much whatever they want.
Mennonites are no strangers to wealth. Perhaps they were predisposed to do well. Hard work, thrift, and an aversion to luxury have often led to financial well-being.
