Blackgang Chine, located on the Isle of Wight, is the UK’s oldest theme park, established in 1843 by entrepreneur Alexander Dabell as a Victorian pleasure garden. Originally known for its dramatic coastal ravine, smuggling history, and a famous fin whale skeleton, the park has evolved into a family attraction featuring dinosaurs, pirates, and fairy tales, while continuously adapting to coastal erosion.
Not many visitor attractions can say they've operated through and survived two World Wars and had Queen Victoria come to visit, but the Isle of Wight's Blackgang Chine can. Overlooking the English Channel, the family-run attraction was founded in 1843 and is the UK's oldest theme park.
Its initial theme of a general-purpose scenic and curiosity park led to one of its most famous attractions, a large whale skeleton, which had been washed up near the coast of The Needles in 1842, and is still a showpiece today.
Blackgang Chine gets its name from the blue slipper clay the lands rests upon, which can be quite muddy and black in colour. A “gang” means a walk way, while the Chine, a coastal ravine, has long since eroded away.
