Nagar Valley, located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, was an independent princely state from roughly 1300 to 1891, governed by local Mirs and known for its strategic, isolated location. Following a British invasion in 1891, it became a British protectorate, then part of Pakistan in 1947, before being fully integrated as a district in 1974.
History. Nagar, established in the 14th century, operated as an autonomous principality until the British exerted control over the region during the Hunza–Nagar Campaign (1889–1893). Subsequently, it became a colonial princely state under the jurisdiction of the Gilgit Agency until 1947.
On 14 August 1948 and with the last box of the reserve ammunition used, the garrison surrendered to Col. Mata-ul-Mulk. All the remaining men were reportedly killed by the invaders, except for Col. Thapa and his Sikh orderly, who were taken prisoner.
Nagar-I is called as 'Chota Nagar' (چھوٹا نگر) in Urdu, meaning Small Nagar, while Nagar-II is often called 'Bara Nagar' (بڑا نگر) meaning Big Nagar. Burushaski and Shina languages are predominantly spoken in the valley.
