The Amar Mahal Palace in Jammu, a red sandstone structure overlooking the Tawi River, was built in the 1890s for Raja Amar Singh of the Dogra dynasty. Designed by a French architect in a French-chateau style, it served as the last official residence of the Dogra kings. It was converted into a museum by Dr. Karan Singh and his wife in 1975 to preserve Dogra heritage.
Amar Mahal was sketched by a French architect in the year 1862 but it was not executed till 1890's. After the death of Maharani Tara Devi in 1967, her son Dr. Karan Singh and his wife Mrs. Yasho Rajya Lakshmi converted this palace for use as a museum.
