Golkonda (or Golconda) refers to a historic fortress city in India (near Hyderabad) famous as a medieval diamond trading center and capital of the Qutb Shahi kingdom. Derived from Telugu for "shepherd's hill," it has become a metaphor for a "mine of wealth" or a source of immense, unexpected riches.
By the 1880s, "Golconda" was being used generically by English speakers to refer to any particularly rich mine, and later to any source of great wealth.
Golconda was the principal capital of the Qutub Shahi kings. The inner fort contains ruins of palaces, mosques and a hill top pavilion, which rises about 130 meters high and gives a bird's eye view of other buildings. Golconda fort is undoubtedly one of most magnificent fortress complexes in India.
The name originates from the Telugu words "Golla Konda" meaning "Shepherd's Hill". The origins of the fort can be traced back to the Yadava dynasty of Deogiri and the Kakatiyas of Warangal.

Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk, more often though less correctly referred to in English as Quli Qutb Shah (1485 – 2 September 1543), was the founder of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, which ruled the Sultanate of Golconda in southern India from 1518 to 1687.

The Siege of Golconda in 1687 was a defining event led by Emperor Aurangzeb. It marked the culmination of Mughal expansion in southern India. In this pivotal battle, the Mughals assaulted the walled fortress, with Aurangzeb himself overseeing the campaign.

Hyderabad's first ruler, Asaf Jah I (r. 1724–1748) was a talented commander and assembled a powerful army that allowed Hyderabad to become one of the preeminent states in southern India. After his death, the military was crippled by the succession wars of his sons.
If Golconda is achieved, several suggested benefits are outlined in the rulebooks. The most common ones are a lack of frenzy (characters in Golconda do not frenzy at all), reduced blood consumption (down to a point a week) and the ability to learn Disciplines without generation limits.
Golconda was a nucleus of power and wealth in the Deccan region, with control over important agricultural tracts, diamond mines, and trade routes; such factors may have influenced Aurangzeb's continued determination to conquer the Sultanate.
Golconda was inspired by photographs of soldiers parachuting during World War I. In the painting, he reimagined the scene with identically dressed men in bowler hats. Magritte lived in a similar suburban environment, and dressed in a similar fashion.
