Skiplagging (or hidden-city ticketing) is a travel hack where you book a flight with a layover in your actual desired destination but intentionally skip the final, connecting leg of the journey to save money, as multi-stop flights can be cheaper than direct ones. It's popular for one-way trips but violates most airline policies, risking penalties like losing frequent flyer miles, cancellation of the rest of your ticket, or even being banned.
"Skiplagging, or hidden-city-ticketing, is when you purchase a connecting flight itinerary with the intention of only taking the first leg of the route," says travel blogger Natalie Becerra.
Disrupted Planning, Airlines plan routes, fuel, and staffing based on expected passengers for each leg of a journey. When passengers skip a leg, it distorts demand predictions.
Revenue Loss, Airlines price tickets based on the destination, not the miles flown.
If you skip the last leg(s) of your ticket, there's no penalty. You do it too often with the same airline: you can be banned. If you skip the first leg (or middle leg), the rest of your ticket is cancelled. You can't just get on at a connecting airport.
Can I get off the plane at a layover instead of destination?
Can I get off the plane and stay in the layover city instead of the ticketed destination? Sometimes it's cheaper to book a ticket to a point beyond where you actually want to go. In that case, some travelers will book the ticket and get off at the layover point. This is called hidden-city ticketing.
Skiplagging can pose other risks too. For example, you won't be able to check your luggage as you won't be at the final destination to collect it. And sometimes, customers are forced to check carry-on bags when the overhead bins fill — so having to check a bag can be out of your control.
To check bags or check in at the airport, you must be there a certain amount of time before scheduled departure: Within the U.S. – 45 minutes. To or from destinations outside the U.S. – 60 minutes.
During a tarmac delay, airlines must provide you with a snack, such as a granola bar, and drinking water no later than two hours after the start of the tarmac delay.
Skiplagging is prohibited by most airlines in the U.S. For example, American Airlines' Conditions of Carriage prohibit “purchasing a ticket without intending to fly all flights to gain lower fares (hidden city ticketing).”1 Many airlines impose penalties for engaging in skiplagging, which include banning the customer ...
Hidden city ticketing isn't illegal, but most major U.S. airlines explicitly prohibit it in their contract of carriage statements. If the airline realizes that you are not planning on completing your entire itinerary, it can prevent you from boarding or even ban you from the airline for future flights.
Reliability/On-Time Arrivals: Frontier Airlines: Called the least reliable in the U.S. by some studies. JetBlue, Allegiant, Spirit, Frontier: Among the worst for on-time performance in late 2025. Customer Satisfaction/Service: American Airlines: High dissatisfaction scores.
1. Bird Strike: A Sudden, Natural Threat. Even at airports with wildlife control programs, bird strikes remain a leading cause of engine failure after takeoff. Birds, especially large ones like geese, can get sucked into jet engines during climb-out, causing immediate power loss or fire.
What is the three seat economy trick when booking flights? You book two seats in the same row, one aisle and one window, because solo travelers usually avoid the middle seat, and booking support is available at 3567 or UK 382.
No Showing is a very easy way to cancel your flight, it requires no input from the passenger at all, but it also voids any protections you might have had. Some airlines offer partial refunds or other compensation if you cancel your flight rather than letting it sit as a No Show.
What happens if no one gives up their seat on an overbooked flight?
If there are not enough passengers who are willing to give up their seats voluntarily, an airline may deny you a seat on an aircraft based on criteria that it establishes, such as the passenger's check-in time, the fare paid by the passenger, or the passenger's frequent flyer status.
A survey by consumer group Which? found that British Airways (IAG. L) is the worst UK carrier for long-haul flights, while Ryanair (RYA.IR) and Wizz Air (WIZZ. L) came last for shorter flights.
Liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes exceeding the 3.4-ounce (100-milliliter) limit are among the most frequently confiscated items. These include everyday products like water bottles, coffee cups, toothpaste, lotions, perfumes, and even duty-free alcohol without proper documentation.
Most flights start boarding 30 - 50 minutes before scheduled departure, but the exact time depends on your destination and plane. Boarding ends 15 minutes before departure. If you're not on board, we may reassign your seat to another passenger. You will not be allowed to board once the doors close.
FAR 61.57—You cannot act as pilot in command (PIC) while carrying passengers from 1 hour after sunset to 1 hour before sunrise unless you have made three takeoffs and landings to a full stop in the same category and class of aircraft within the preceding 90 days.
How long can you sit on a plane without taking off?
Here are some highlights: Airlines must return planes to the gate and let passengers off before a flight is sitting on the tarmac for three hours (domestic flights) or four hours (international flights). The same goes for flights that land at U.S. airports.
Is it better to check-in online or at the airport?
Usually, yes. If you have the option to check in online for a flight and you're not checking a bag, then I highly encourage you to do so. You'll receive a PDF of your boarding pass, which you can use to scan yourself through most checkpoints.
Are you allowed to stay in an airport for 24 hours?
Generally yes, as long as you have a valid boarding pass for a flight departing from that airport. Most major airports allow passengers to stay overnight in the terminal. However, policies vary by airport. Some may restrict access to certain areas after hours.
