The oldest history of Karachi dates back to 326 BC, when it was known to the Greeks as Krokala or Morontobara, a fishing settlement where Alexander the Greatβs admiral, Nearchus, stayed. It was later known as a small village called Kolachi-jo-Goth, established by local tribes, before developing into a fortified trade hub in 1729.
In 1729, immigrants from the silting-up port of Kharak relocated to found Karachi near the Hub River mouth. Initially, Karachi was a modest settlement, but its trade grew as other ports like Shahbandar and Keti Bandar also silted up. According to some legends, Karachi is named after a fisherwoman called Mai Kolachi.
Lyari is said to be one of the oldest inhabited parts of Karachi, and is referred to by its residents as the "Mother of Karachi." Its name is said to be derived from a Sindhi word Lyar - a tree which grows along the banks of the river. The first residents of Lyari were Sindhi fishermen and Baloch nomads (pawans).
