The Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) belongs to the Aeshnidae family, commonly known as hawker dragonflies or darners. As part of the suborder Anisoptera, they are large, fast-flying dragonflies. The Aeshnidae family contains some of the largest dragonflies in Europe and North America.
