In Newham, London's most diverse borough, 69.2% of people are non-white. In Brent, Redbridge, Harrow and Tower Hamlets, the figure is also above 60%. At the other end of the spectrum, less than a quarter of the population in Richmond upon Thames (19.5%), Bromley (23.5%) and Havering (24.7%) is non-white.
Cities across the UK regions with high White British populations included Swansea (91.5%), Kingston Upon Hull (89.7%), Plymouth (92.2%), Darlington (93.7%), Belfast (96.4% - NI classification "white"), Norwich (84.7%), Liverpool (84.8%) and Chelmsford (90.0%).
Generally, they live within commuting distance, in the best home they can afford. That could be anywhere. There are no, special English ghettos in or around London. The one almost-exception to this is City workers who are contracted to live within a set distance of their office.
East Ham is a well known locality of Asians in London, with a majority being Indians. East Ham extends to nearly 20 square miles and is largely self contained, residential and shopping district.
According to the 2021 Census, London was the most ethnically diverse region in England and Wales – 63.2% of residents identified with an ethnic minority group.
Almost 97 per cent of Black Britons live in England, particularly in England's larger urban areas, with most (over a million) Black British living in Greater London.
The most ethnically diverse area was found the east London borough of Newham, closely followed by Brent and Redbridge. Outside London, the highest non-white proportion of the population is in Slough, in Berkshire.
The East End has always contained some of London's poorest areas. The main reasons for this include: The medieval system of copyhold, which prevailed throughout the Manor of Stepney into the 19th century. There was little point in developing land that was held on short leases.
Golborne is the most deprived ward in London with a score of 46.6. Golborne has a population of nearly 9,000 residents. Again, Kensington and Chelsea is the most expensive borough in London but the wealth disparity is concentrated in certain parts of the borough.
There are several areas with clusters of neighbourhoods that are highly deprived. These include parts of inner London, particularly around Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Islington, parts of East London and the western side of the Lea Valley up into Enfield.
Whites form a majority of London's population and are evenly spread. Bromley has the highest White British population as well as highest total White, while Newham has the lowest for both.
Hackney is one of London's cleanest boroughs because of its high cycling population. In 2014 more residents cycled to work than who drove. Additionally, more residents cycled to work than in any other London borough.
That figure is highest in Wales and the North east of England - the whitest borough is Blanaeu Gwent in Wales, where 96.5% of the population is white British, followed by Copeland in Cumbria, where only 2% of the population are not white.
London had the highest estimated Asian population of any region, at approximately 1.63 million people, followed by the West Midlands with an estimated Asian population of 737 thousand people.
London (13.5%) and the West Midlands (4.5%) had the highest percentage of people who identified as black – the North East (1.0%) and Wales (0.9%) had the lowest.
The places with the lowest diversity index rating were Allerdale and Copeland in Cumbria, the Staffordshire Moorlands, Redcar and Cleveland and Anglesey. In each of these at least 96% of the population was white British in the 2021 census.
The least multicultural was Easington, Co Durham, at 2%. The report showed the London borough of Harrow was the most religiously diverse, with a 62% chance that a random encounter would be between people declaring a different religion.
There are constituencies with large Asian populations in cities including Leicester, London, Bradford and Birmingham. The constituencies with the largest Black populations, and with high proportions of people identifying with Mixed or Multiple ethnic groups or 'other' ethnic groups, are mostly in London.
The largest concentrations are in East London, especially in Redbridge, Waltham Forest, Newham and Barking and Dagenham. Significant communities can also be found in the boroughs of Ealing, Hounslow, and Hillingdon in West London and Merton, Wandsworth and Croydon in South London.
The traditional homeland of London's Arabic-speaking Muslims is in the City of Westminster, with the initial settlement around Edgware Road since spreading to Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham, Brent, and Ealing.
Office for National Statistics (ONS) data shows that Hong Kong and mainland Chinese buyers invested £7.69 billion in London property, including more than £750 million in residential property in the central neighbourhoods of Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea last year.
