A Berserker (Old Norse: berserkr) was a Scandinavian warrior in the Viking Age, often serving as an elite champion, bodyguard, or shock trooper, renowned for fighting in a trance-like, uncontrollable fury known as berserkergang (or "going berserk"). They were defined by their total disregard for personal safety, apparent immunity to pain, and animalistic behavior in battle, such as howling, biting their shields, and attacking without armor.
