In the U.S., Hispanic women generally have higher fertility rates and larger average family sizes compared to White, Black, Asian, or American Indian/Alaska Native women, with data from the March of Dimes and Pew Research showing Hispanics leading in fertility rates and large families. Black mothers also tend to have larger families than White or Asian mothers, who often have smaller families, though having two children is common across most groups, with Asians most likely to have exactly two.
In the United States, the highest fertility rates (per 1,000 women ages 15-44) during 2021-2023 (average) were to Hispanic women (64.4), followed by Blacks (55.2), Whites (52.5), American Indian/Alaska Natives (49.3) and Asian/Pacific Islanders (48.1).
Hispanics have the youngest, 27.6. Non-Hispanic blacks (32.9) and non-Hispanic Asians (35.9) also are younger than whites. Related to their younger age profiles, racial and ethnic minority groups also include a higher share of women in the prime child-bearing ages of 20-34.
In the United States during 2021-2023 (average), the multiple birth ratio (per 1,000 live births) was highest for Black infants (42.1), followed by Whites (33.1), American Indian/Alaska Natives (27.3), Hispanics (24.9) and Asian/Pacific Islanders (24.3).
Race. African-American people assigned female at birth are more likely to have twins than any other race. Asian Americans and Native Americans have the lowest rates for twins. White people assigned female at birth have the highest rate of higher-order multiple births (triplets or more).

Percy Nylander clarified many of the factors that contribute to this high incidence of twinning. His analyses of Nigerian placentation and zygosity have shown the increased rate of multiple pregnancy to be a result of higher proportions of dizygotic twins and trizygotic triplets as compared to Caucasian populations.

Fully half of Hispanic mothers have three or more kids, compared with 40% of blacks. About one-third (33%) of whites have three or more kids, and just 27% of Asian moms do.
