Before it was the independent nation of Mexico, the territory was the Spanish colony known as the Viceroyalty of New Spain (1535–1821), ruled by Spain after conquering the powerful Aztec Empire (Mexica) in 1521, whose capital was Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Pre-Columbian Mexico featured many advanced civilizations, like the Olmec, Maya, Zapotec, and Mixtec, who lived in the region known as Anáhuac.
For only 15 years, from 1821 (when Mexican independence was secured) to the Texan Revolt in 1836, the Mexican Cession (excluding Texas) formed approximately 42% of the country of Mexico. Prior to that, it had been a part of the Spanish colony of New Spain for three centuries.

The U.S. also tried to buy Texas and what was called “Mexican California” from Mexico, which was seen as an insult by Mexico, before war broke out.
The Olmecs were the first major group to settle in Mexico. Their society died off due to environmental factors, but they influenced future civilizations, like the Mayans. The Mayan civilization is the most well-known of Mexico's Native American groups. They lasted from 1000 BCE to 1521 CE.
Land disputes between the descendants of Mexican land owners and Anglo Americans continued into the 21st century. The United States also agreed to assume $3.25 million (equivalent to $118.1 million today) in debts that Mexico owed to United States citizens.
