Sadly, as the racecourse got busier and busier, it couldn't be expanded due to the railway being so close and the last meeting was held on 22nd October 1880. County Hall was eventually built on the site of the grandstand and our school was built in 1970 on the old racecourse.
Established in 1539, Chester is the oldest racecourse still in operation in the world. During the Roman occupation of Britain, most of the modern sixty-five-acre site of Chester Racecourse was not even dry land.
The course closed in 1964, and the following year the race relocated to Doncaster Racecourse where a small change to the race title sees it run as the Lincoln Handicap. The track's history was long and significant.
However, the course went into decline after World War II, losing out to the competing attractions of cinema and TV. It finally closed on 16 June 1981 due to falling attendances. The last winner was a horse called Suniti. The site is now a shopping centre called Teesside Park.
The Racecourse officially closed on 18th October 1977 due to financial problems and the site is now used by various clubs and societies in the area. Today, the Racecourse is popular with walkers and dog walkers.

Deemed inaccessible and exposed to the elements which in turn affected crowds, closure was inevitable when the British Racing Board ended funding in 1963. Now a mini-revival in Lewes' fortunes is taking place with the present incumbents and others trainers such as Sheena West and Jamie Poulton on the doorstep.
In July 2012, Arena Leisure and Northern Racing, the lessees of the racecourse announced the closure of the racecourse as a temporary measure. Outdated facilities and the delay of a project to build houses on part of the site were given as the reasons for the closure.
The course is a left handed oval of about 1 mile 2 furlongs with a 3 furlong finishing straight and a 6 furlong chute. The present course opened in 1923, but racing had taken place on the old course at nearby Black Hambleton over 200 years earlier. Thirsk Racecourse Ltd.
The development of the railways spelled the end of racing on the site as people and horses could travel to grander racecourses. The last race meeting was held in 1848 – the very same year that the Shrewsbury to Chester railway line opened.
Due to the links of the Racecourse to Northampton's history, it remains one of the town's famous landmarks. The Racecourse did hold regular horse racing meetings. However, these ceased in 1904.
Richmond Racecourse was a British horse racing track situated at Richmond, North Yorkshire at first High Moor, then Low Moor, from 1765 to 1776. It was last used for horse racing in 1891. The grandstand, believed to have been designed by John Carr, is now the oldest surviving stone-built public grandstand in the world.

Greenetrack ended live racing in 1996. VictoryLand ceased live racing on June 1, 2011. Citing declining demand, Mobile Greyhound Park discontinued live racing on August 19, 2017. And Birmingham Race Course held its last race on March 18, 2020, as owners determined business levels did not justify continuing to race.
In addition to being the oldest active racecourse in the country, Chester is also the smallest, at just over one mile long. The circular track is famous for its long continuous left-handed bend, which makes the course extremely challenging for both horse and jockey.

Victoria Park racecourse ceased operation in 2010 when all horseracing finally moved to Morphettville. Most of the other structures have now been dismantled.
