The historic Southern Market in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania, originally opened in 1888. Following a major renovation, the building relaunched as a modern food hall on January 27, 2022. It currently features 10 globally-inspired food vendors, a central bar, and a coffee shop.
In October 1984, the market was destroyed in a huge fire. The building was eventually replace with a modern structure on the original site ten years later. However, the new market never proved successful and closed in 2010, the City Council transferring ownership to a private company.
Willow Valley Communities, the developer and operator of Southern Market, is partnering with Lancaster Equity, the nonprofit collaborative that owns Southern Market, and ASSETS, which will provide startup support and industry-specific training.
The Marketgate development changed hands over the years, with Allied (Lancaster) Ltd taking ownership in 2008. In May 2012 Council took the decision to end the indoor market operation. That signified a fundamental shift in approach and was a very difficult step to take.
From its open field inception in 1730, the public has had the unique privilege of owning Market. The beautiful 1889 Market House that stands today is owned by the City of Lancaster, who collaborates with the Central Market Trust for its maintenance.

What is the oldest street in Lancaster?
Before September 1899 China Street was called China Lane. It is one of Lancaster's oldest streets, having been depicted as Kelne Lane on Speed's map of the town, published in 1610 and probably based on his visit to Lancaster in 1607 (Figure 1) (Saunders, 2013, 26; Webster 2020, 23).
Archaeological evidence suggests that Colchester is England's oldest recorded market town, dating to at least the time of the Roman occupation of Britain's southern regions. Another ancient market town is Cirencester, which held a market in late Roman Britain.
Toponymy. Lancaster was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, as Loncastre, where "Lon" refers to the River Lune and "castre" from the Old English cæster and Latin castrum for "fort" to the Roman fort that stood on the site.

On October 4, 2024, Clemens Food Group announced that after 123 years in the Lancaster area, the Kunzler plant on 652 Manor Street will be closing on December 7, 2024. 193 employees will lose their jobs.
