The beauty of an underground lakeIn this volcanic cave in the north of Lanzarote, it is impossible not to be affected by the quiet, almost magical atmosphere. Its natural lake, within the cave itself, is slightly illuminated by the sun and is home to an albino crab, unique in the world.
They are small, blind and pale, and can be found in the caves of Jameos del Agua, in lava tubes formed by volcanic eruptions 15,000 - 13,000 years ago.
Crime. On the whole, Lanzarote is a very safe place to take a holiday, with relatively little crime. However, break-ins do occur every now and then, so you are advised to use the safety deposit box in your accommodation for valuables and also not to leave them unattended in your vehicle.

The most common crab you're likely to see on Lanzarote is the cangrejo rojo, or red crab. This is part of a large family of rock crabs that live on both sides of the Atlantic, and their cousin in South America is known as the Sally Lightfoot crab, named after a famous dancer.

The Jameos del Agua is open 365 days a year from 10:00 - 17:15. The entrance fee varies between 16 € (adults) and 8 € (children from 7 to 12 years old), being free for children under 7 years old.
