The iconic "Divination staircase" from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the Geometric Staircase located in the south-west bell tower of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. It is a real, historic stone spiral staircase. Additionally, the Bodley Staircase at Christ Church College, Oxford, was used for the scene where1st years are greeted in The Sorcerer's Stone.
History. The staircase was built sometime between 1877 and 1881. By this point, the chapel was substantially complete but still lacking access to the choir loft, possibly due to the unexpected death of the architect, Projectus Mouly, in 1879.
