The original Dorothy Lane Market began as a fruit stand in August 1948 at the corner of Far Hills Avenue and Dorothy Lane in Oakwood (Dayton), Ohio. In 1953, the store moved to a permanent location nearby at 2710 Far Hills Ave, Dayton, OH 45419, where it still operates as the flagship Oakwood store.
Our Roots. In August of 1948, Calvin Mayne and his partner Frank Sakada opened the first Dorothy Lane Market at the corner of Far Hills Avenue and Dorothy Lane, in Oakwood, on the south side of Dayton, Ohio. They started out selling mostly fruits and vegetables, and some meat and groceries.
We have 3 stores in Dayton and one on the way in Mason, OH. We specialize in gourmet foods, baked goods and quality meats and cheeses. Our online gifting site features many local Ohio makers in our gourmet and nostalgic Ohio Gift Boxes.
It is owned by the Mayne family, and it is in its fourth generation. The company's annual revenue is $80,000,000 and it has just over 900 employees. A handful of these originals still exist today in private collections and museums. You can see one of the original Dorothy Wizard of Oz dresses on display at the Wizard of Oz Museum in Cape Canaveral, Florida, along with rare memorabilia like ruby slippers and movie props.
