Why billions of people won't eat pork (or why we don't know)
Which animal has the tastiest meat?
Hippopotamus. In the words of author and hunter Peter Hathaway Capstick, “It is my personal opinion that hippo meat is one of the finest of game foods … The taste is mild, less than lamb and more than beef, slightly more marbled than usual venison. It tastes exactly like, well, hippo.”
Mainly cost; it's cheaper to raise a sheep for 6-12 months then slaughter, than raise it for 2+ years then slaughter. People also tend to prefer (or at least have got used to) the milder tasting meat of lamb.
The most unhealthy meats are generally considered to be processed meats (bacon, sausage, deli meats) and fatty red meats (beef, lamb, pork), due to high levels of saturated fat, sodium, preservatives (nitrates/nitrites) linked to cancer, and potential links to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and bowel cancer. Ultra-processed poultry products, especially those with added sodium and unhealthy fats from skin/sauces, also rank poorly, while concerns exist around foodborne pathogens like Salmonella in chicken.
As for pork, dishes like tonkatsu (breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet), shabu-shabu (pork hot pot), and buta-don (pork rice bowl) are commonly found in Japanese cuisine. Overall, while seafood is the most consumed meat in Japan, chicken and pork also play significant roles in the country's culinary landscape.
In the Torah, pigs are listed among several animals that God forbids for human consumption because they are considered to be ritually unclean. This sentiment is echoed in the Quran.
Humans = Risk, Not Prey. Studies show that large predators like lions instinctively avoid humans. We've been a potential threat to them over millennia — not a food source. As long as we don't provoke or surprise them, they'd rather steer clear.
While chicken is the largest contributor to daily meat intake by volume and beef mince is a top-selling product, beef often tops polls for the most popular choice, especially for traditional meals like the Sunday roast, though pork (sausages, bacon) remains a strong family favourite. Trends show high consumption of white meat (chicken/turkey) and processed meats, but beef's versatility in dishes like Bolognese keeps it popular.
Which countries eat the most meat? According to UN Food and Agriculture Organization data reported by website World Population Review, the United States, Argentina and Australia are in the top of the global meat-eating league with more than 110 kg consumed per capita in 2022.
The number one most eaten food in the world by volume and staple status is rice, feeding over half the global population daily and providing essential energy, followed closely by other major staples like maize (corn) and wheat, which together with rice, form the basis of most human diets.
United States beef imports in Japan were a contentious issue in Japan–United States relations after BSE (mad cow disease) was detected in a steer in Washington. After multiple beef import restrictions in Japan, the United States and Japan struck a trade deal to lift the beef import ban in May 2019.
Lentils are part of the legume family. Most of world's lentil production comes from India and Canada. Lentils can lower cholesterol, and protect against diabetes and colon cancer. They are known as “Poor Man's Meat”, since they are rich in nutrients and low in price.
Among all animal meats pork is the filthiest diet to consume by human beings. Pig is the cradle of harmful germs. Scientific evidences prove that pig meat is least healthy having different harmful agents like Cholesterol and Fatty Acids, Bacteria and Toxins and a number of parasites.
The healthiest meats are lean poultry (skinless chicken, turkey breast) and fish, as they're lower in saturated fat, with fatty fish offering heart-healthy omega-3s, while lean cuts of pork and grass-fed beef are also good options when consumed in moderation, focusing on lean choices and limiting processed or fatty red meats. The key is choosing unprocessed, lean options and removing skin to reduce saturated fat, prioritizing poultry, fish, and lean pork over fattier cuts or processed varieties.
Pork and chicken should not be eaten raw. Lean beef is sometimes eaten raw (such as steak tartare and carpaccio) and is generally considered safe. Washing the surface of the meat and searing it will kill bacteria on the surface, which makes eating the raw meat less risky.
Because so few states in America initially raised sheep, the cost for lamb meat would be higher than other meats. This cost barrier prevented many Americans from even trying lamb meat. This initial barrier has made it difficult for lamb meat to gain popularity in the US.
The water needs for sheep are very low during grazing season when the grass is relatively lush, during wet weather, and when sheep don't raise lambs. It is entirely possible that my flock of sheep doesn't drink a drop of water on wetter or cooler grazing days.
