West Glacier is generally considered the best entrance for convenience, lodging, and access to Lake McDonald, while the St. Mary and Many Glacier entrances are superior for dramatic, rugged scenery, hiking, and wildlife. A balanced 2-3 day trip often involves using both sides to experience the full park.
As mentioned before, Glacier Park has entrances on the west and east sides. For simplicity and convenience, we recommend the main west side entrance of West Glacier and the east side entrance of St. Mary.
Contrary to what you'll read from many online sources, I think it's best to stay on the East side of Glacier. The West side is more built up, but the East has way more to offer in terms of hikes and things to do. The East side has Many Glacier, St. Mary's Lake, and Two Medicine Lake.

In my humble opinion, if you are wanting to stay near Glacier National Park, go for the west side for the many amenities. But if you want something small and quiet, then the east side is the place for you. Just make sure you go when the season is still open (July or August) so you can eat out.
