Saint Lucy of Syracuse (also known as Saint Lucia) is the saint, often depicted with eyes on a plate, who according to legend either gouged out her own eyes to refuse a suitor or had them removed by her persecutors. She is the patron saint of the blind, eye disorders, and the city of Syracuse, Sicily.
Legend has it that Saint Lucy either plucked out her own eyes to avoid marriage to a pagan, or had her eyes put out by the Emperor Diocletian as part of her martyrdom.
Acutis, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 15 due to leukemia, was admired for his work in creating a website documenting Eucharistic miracles worldwide.
