Mahadevbhai Desai was Mahatma Gandhi's private secretary and chronicler of his day-to-day life for 25 years. When Gandhi was arrested during the Civil Disobedience Movement and imprisoned in the Yerawada Jail in Pune, Maharashtra, Desai dutifully recorded and described the various aspects of his life.
Charles Freer Andrews (1871 – 1940) was an anglican priest, social reformer, supporter of Indian independence movement, and a beloved friend of Mahatma Gandhi.
He advocated for social reforms, including the upliftment of untouchables (whom Gandhi referred to as Harijans), women's rights, and the promotion of education and healthcare in rural areas. Despite his deep association with the Gandhian movement, Mahadev Desai's personal life was one of sacrifice and selfless service.
His published works include: Vir Vallabhbhai (1928), Sant Francis (1934) and Be Khudsi Khidmatgar, a biography of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan and his brother. He was also involved in translation of numerous English, Hindi and Gujarati works.
