The Bhendi Bazaar gharana was founded around 1890 in Mumbai by three brothers: Ustad Chhajjoo Khan, Ustad Nazeer Khan, and Ustad Khadim Hussain Khan. Originally from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, they moved to the Bhendi Bazaar area, developing a unique style known for breath control, aakaar singing, and the Merukhand system.
History. During the British Raj, Bhendi Bazaar was built as a labor camp for workers, engaged in the development of Bombay, to stay in. The buildings of the labor camp were later sold to private owners who in turn accommodated tenants based on the local pagri system.
