St. Lawrence Island is jointly owned by the Siberian Yupik people living in its two villages, Savoonga and Gambell, who received the land title from the U.S. government in 2016 following the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. This makes the island private property of the native communities, managed by their corporations, Kukulget, Inc. (Savoonga) and Sivuqaq, Inc. (Gambell), allowing them to control their land and resources.
Two Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) are located on St. Lawrence Island. The U.S. military stationed forces in and around Gambell during and after World War II. The Air Force operated an Aircraft Control and Warning Station in Gambell from 1948 to 1956.

Most visitors arrive as part of guided birding tours based out of Gambell. These multi-day tours typically start in Nome with chartered air service to Gambell, where small tour groups will settle in at the town's one small inn or a guest house before beginning their birding excursions.
