St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands was formerly a colony of Denmark, known as part of the Danish West Indies. The United States purchased the island from the Danish West India and Guinea Company, officially taking possession in 1917. Before Danish colonization, the island was inhabited by Arawak and Carib Indians.
