Starting life as a small mail-order business, Barbara Hulanicki's 'Biba' evolved into a style and retail phenomenon. The daughter of a Polish diplomat, Barbara Hulanicki moved to London with her family after the Second World War.
John McConnell designed two versions of the Biba logo. The first was designed for the Biba mail order catalogues around 1966 and drew on Art Nouveau lettering of the 1890s for inspiration, a form of Celtic lettering reinterpreted by the Liberty style of the period.

The store finally sadly closed down in September 1975 after time spent battling with the major share holders – Dorothy Perkins and British Land who wanted to change the look of Biba and make it more commercial. This was not helped by the financial climate at this time.

In 2009, the British department store group House of Fraser bought the rights to the Biba label. In 2014, Hulanicki agreed to serve as a consultant for Biba, the first time since 1975 that she had been involved with her created brand.
