Begum Samru (born Farzana Zeb-un-Nissa, c. 1753–1837) is recognized as the only Catholic ruler in18th-19th century India. A former nautch girl, she married European mercenary Walter Reinhardt Sombre, inheriting hisjagir (estate) of Sardhana near Meerut after his death in 1778. She ruled for over five decades, commanded a trained army, and was baptized as Joanna Nobilis.
Regarded as the only Catholic ruler in India, Begum Samru inherited the Jagir of Sardhana upon her husband, Walter Reinhardt Sombre's death. She was immensely admired for her military acumen.
