Trams, which were once the dominant form of urban public transport, were largely removed from cities during the mid-20th century due to a combination of rising traffic congestion, the need for flexible transit, high maintenance costs, and a, shift towards motor buses.
Due to massive increase of traffic congestions in most city roads, trams had become a very slow mode of transport. Increase in the volume of traffic and rash driving by the bikers and auto drivers made boarding on and getting down from the trams a very risky exercise.
Increasingly, trams were seen as noisy and dangerous to road users, and costly to taxpayers. In 1931, a Royal Commission had recommended replacing trams with trolleybuses. LT adopted this policy, and the conversion programme began in 1935. By 1940, half of London's trams had been scrapped.
20th Century. After World War II, trams fell out of favour and Liverpool City Council voted to scrap the system in 1957. The controversial decision was made by the casting vote of the mayor – a protocol requirement in the event of a hung vote.
In recent decades, trams have been making a comeback. By 2020, a little over 400 cities had trams, serving an estimated 14.7 billion passengers annually. Europe is the global stronghold of this mode of transport, accounting for nearly 60% of total network length and around 75% of all passengers.

Why doesn't London have trams?
An extensive tram network covered large parts of London for several decades during the first half of the twentieth century. By the 1950s, however, trams were seen as old fashioned and were gradually phased out to create more room for buses and cars.
Trams are a more reliable form of transport than buses, which means you can rely on them for your commute. In Birmingham, the same journey is approximately twice as fast by tram as by bus, with far greater consistency day to day.
A planned tram system for West Yorkshire has been delayed after the government carried out a review of the project. West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) had hoped that trams would be running on two lines in Leeds and Bradford in the early 2030s, however it is now likely to be the late 2030s.
Transport for London has confirmed that it is pressing ahead in ordering a £50million new fleet of trams for its south London network that runs between Croydon, Beckenham Junction and Wimbledon.
Closure. The tram system was gradually phased out between 1949 and 1962 (in favour of trolley and diesel-powered buses), with the final trams operating on 4 September 1962. By that time only one route remained in operation, the number 9 which ran from Auchenshuggle to Dalmuir.
However, concerns over safety, maneuverability, and congestion led to the eventual phasing out of bendy buses from London's streets in favor of more conventional bus designs.
