Lord Jagannath falls sick (Anavasara) for 15 days annually following the Snana Yatra (bathing festival) on Jyeshtha Purnima, where deities are bathed with 108 pots of water. This ritual, meant to symbolize human-like, intimate connection with devotees, causes a simulated fever, requiring rest, isolation, and Ayurvedic treatment before the Rath Yatra.
The Lord said to his devotee Madhav, “Now there are 15 more days of illness left in your destiny, so give me the illness for 15 days.” After this Lord Jagannath took the remaining 15 days of illness of his devotee Madhav Das himself. This is the reason why Lord Jagannath falls ill even today.
